New capital, fresh momentum, continued growth

Auerbach and Briese form a strategic alliance

Dear Friends and Business Partners,

Just under six years since the founding of Auerbach Schifffahrt, I am pleased to announce our strategic partnership with Briese Schiffahrt. Built on trust, the cooperation of the past few years, which included the development and support of a newbuilding project, will not only seamlessly continue, but indeed be brought to the next level. It brings with it fresh momentum, operative connections and new capital, forming a good basis for the continued solid and steady growth of Auerbach Schifffahrt. We are aiming to work more closely with our partners from Leer in the areas of project development and ship management in the future.

In addition to the operative cooperation, the alliance also entails changes and interrelations to personnel. As of 1 August, Rafal Mirski will strengthen the Auerbach management team. Rafal has been in charge of building up and advising the company’s operative business since January 2014. I am happy to have such a committed and competent managing partner for the future advancement of Auerbach Schifffahrt.

Effective 1 September, I will assume responsibility for the operative business of Briese Schiffahrt GmbH & Co. KG as chief operating officer. I am looking forward to taking on this challenging and exciting task as well as working with the Briese family and my future colleagues in Leer. As an ongoing managing partner of Auerbach, I will continue to work closely with the grown Auerbach team and our cooperation partner Briese on the strategic advancement in future.

As the Italian author Giuseppe di Lampedusa put it: “If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change”. I, along with the entire Auerbach team, am looking forward to a refreshing dynamic this change will bring and hope to count on you as companions and supporters on our journey.

 Sincerely,

McDermott shipping from Genoa to Singapore

MS “Industrial Grace” – 700 t tandem lift

Acquired in Bremen just under one year ago, our “Industrial Grace” has been employed on behalf of the US-American charterer Intermarine on the world’s seven seas. Here we share with you details of the last shipment  in order to demonstrate the capability of a premium heavy lift vessel with a crane capacity of 2 x 700 tonnes is capable of lifting. On 30 June, our crew along with Intermarine port captain safely loaded a so-called “vertical laying system” and positioned it precisely onto the deck of our “Industrial Grace”. Both cranes were used in tandem operation to accomplish the task of loading the nearly 700-tonne, 32-metre-tall construction. The tower will soon be put into operation about 220 kilometres west of Australia, where one of the largest offshore oil and gas drilling projects is being commissioned under the name “Ichthys LNG Project”.

Successfully loading the VLS brought with it many firsts: for instance, it was the first project undertaken by the Italian manufacturer Re.Ma.Cut in their newly opened terminal in Genoa. The VLS was also the first unit of a series being developed and produced for the US-American offshore service provider McDermott. The vertical laying system was designed as a compact unit and can be used flexibly on various cable laying vessels. It is capable of unloading underwater cables with a diameter of 50–600 mm. The VLS moves as a complete unit and can be switched between ships using a hub. In the third quarter of 2016 in Batam, the LV 108 will be the first McDermott ship to be equipped with the VLS. It was successfully unloaded there just days ago. Anyone interested in more pictures of the shipment can view them on our Facebook page.

Around the world with wind power

E-Ship 1 in Sheet Harbour, Canada
After being put to use several times at the beginning of the year along the European coast, the E-Ship 1 was sent across the Atlantic to Canada with a full load. The wind and weather conditions allowed the rotors to show their full propulsion capabilities and guaranteed maximum energy efficiency. We were also able to film this special ship from a bird’s-eye view thanks to the great weather. You can view these shots on our website.

Meanwhile, the E-Ship 1 has been nominated for this year’s “Wind Propulsion Innovation Award”, presented by the International Windship Association. The E-Ship 1 is one of six projects on the shortlist for an award for the most innovative use of wind energy in commercial shipping. Furthermore, it was also nominated in the category of most innovative use of alternative propulsion at sea. The winners will be awarded at this year’s SMM in Hamburg from 6–9 September. You can vote for us online until 15 August.

Lost and found: three new colleagues on board!
Every good ship needs a strong team. We are pleased to announce that we have filled our three vacancies; the Auerbach Schifffahrt team now consists of 12 people.

Introducing Peggy Nolte, (39). During her perennial years as assistant technical officer as well as engineer on board container ships in worldwide trade, Peggy was responsible for up to 18 ships as the chief technical inspector at NSC. She has been reinforcing our technical team since April.

Introducing Marvin Hollje, (26). After receiving training as a ship mechanic and completing his degree in nautical science in Leer, Marvin quickly developed a passion for maritime quality and safety management.  With his experience in renowned organisations such as Columbia Ship Management, Marvin will be a great asset to the team. He will focus on the conceptual design of a new Auerbach safety management system.

And lastly our trainee: Ann-Cathrin van Looy, (21). Currently a student of International Transport Management at Jade University of Applied Sciences in Elsfleth, Ann-Cathrin has spent a semester abroad studying in Indonesia and completed an internship in Auckland. She will support our Hamburg team for six months.

We are happy to have the three on board!
